MIAMI – We are all different. Some are taller, shorter, bigger or smaller. Now, the biggest study done to date shows how COVID vaccines work with different sized people.

Researchers at Oxford University wanted to find out how well COVID-19 vaccines protect people of different weights from hospitalisation and death. Dr. Carmen Piernas from the University of Oxford said, "The first important result is that vaccines work well for people of all sizes, which is great news."

Scientists looked at the medical records of more than 9 million people in the UK and measured their body mass index (BMI), which is based on their height and weight. Dr. Piernas, who led the study, says that not everyone is the same: "In vaccinated people, there are still cases, and in those cases, we see a higher risk of severe COVID in people who are both overweight and underweight."

But it is still not clear why these groups are more affected. Dr. Piernas said, "There is something going on with underweight and overweight people's immune systems and how they respond to vaccines that we still don't understand very well, which puts them at a higher risk for severe COVID-19."

Researchers also found that people who were underweight were less likely to get the vaccine, but they don't know why. Dr. Piernas now hopes that the government will use their findings to focus on the most vulnerable people. She said that policymakers should think about different ways to decide which vaccines are most important.

And this is what she tells regular people to do. She said, "The main things to remember are to get the vaccine if you can, especially if you're underweight, and to try to lose weight if you're too heavy."

The next step, according to the researchers, is to look at how well booster shots work for people who are overweight or underweight.
